Cosmos DB
A globally distributed NoSQL database built for applications that need consistent, single-digit-millisecond responses no matter where their users are.
Cosmos DB is Azure's fully managed, cloud-native NoSQL database. It stores data as schema-agnostic JSON documents, which means an application's data shape can evolve without a formal schema migration every time a field is added or restructured — a real advantage for products that are still changing shape as they grow. Microsoft's stated target for the service is under 10 milliseconds for both writes and reads, with availability up to 99.999% when data is replicated across multiple regions.
Scaling is automatic rather than something you plan around in advance: Cosmos DB partitions data behind the scenes as throughput demands grow, and a serverless, pay-per-operation pricing tier exists for workloads that don't run at constant volume. It also indexes everything automatically by default, so most queries don't require you to hand-design an index ahead of time the way a traditional relational database would. More recently, it's added vector indexing and hybrid search — combining vector similarity, full-text, and semantic ranking — which is why it now shows up as a backing store for AI applications and copilots, not just traditional transactional systems.
In practice, that combination of low, predictable latency and flexible scaling is what pulls Cosmos DB into real-time payment systems, IoT telemetry pipelines, personalization engines, and multi-tenant SaaS platforms — anywhere the access pattern is high-volume and the acceptable wait time is measured in milliseconds, not seconds.
How AzureForge AI uses Cosmos DB
We reach for Cosmos DB when an application's data genuinely fits a document model better than a relational one — live, high-throughput systems where the shape of the data varies record to record and the application can't afford to wait on a slow query. Its schema flexibility also means we're not locking a client into a rigid table design before we fully understand how their data is going to evolve, which matters on projects where the requirements are still being refined against a live system.
