Power BI

Microsoft's business intelligence platform for turning data spread across an organization into dashboards people actually look at.

Power BI connects to data sources across cloud and on-premises systems and turns them into interactive dashboards and reports. The part that's easy to overlook is what sits between the raw data and the dashboard: a semantic model — a layer of defined business logic (what counts as "revenue," how a fiscal quarter is calculated, which tables relate to which) that every report built on top of it inherits automatically. Get that layer right once, and every report downstream stays consistent instead of each analyst redefining the same metrics slightly differently.

Reports built in Power BI aren't confined to a standalone app — they embed into Microsoft 365, Teams, PowerPoint, and Azure applications, and Power BI Embedded lets a report live inside an entirely separate application's UI. Microsoft has also built Copilot into the platform for generating report narratives and summaries automatically, on top of the self-service side of the tool, which is built so that people without a data or BI background can explore a model and build their own views without waiting on an analyst.

Because it sits at the reporting end of the pipeline rather than the storage or processing end, Power BI's usefulness is capped by the quality of what feeds it — which is why it's typically deployed alongside a properly governed warehouse or lake, not as a replacement for one.

How AzureForge AI uses Power BI

We treat Power BI as the presentation layer on top of a governed data warehouse we've already built and validated — not a way to paper over a data source that isn't trustworthy yet. Dashboards get tied directly to that warehouse so the numbers a client's leadership team is looking at match the numbers underneath the system, with one semantic model defining the metrics instead of every report calculating them independently.
